Kinex Recognized by the University at Buffalo

Kinex Pharmaceuticals was recognized by The University at Buffalo at a Scholars, Inventors and Entrepreneurs Reception in the Center for Tomorrow on the UB North (Amherst) Campus on May 26, 2005.

The annual reception honors the research and commercialization achievements of faculty members. Dr. David Hangauer, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Kinex is also a professor of chemistry at UB. He accepted the honor, on behalf of the Company, in recognition for his work that led to several patents and a license agreement between Kinex and UB for “Novel Methods for Designing Protein Kinase Inhibitors.

The reception was co-hosted by UB Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Satish K. Tripathi and Robert J. Genco, Vice Provost and Director of UB's Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach (STOR). UB President John B. Simpson and Russell W. Bessette, Executive Director of New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research, also attended the event.

"It is the true innovative and intellectually creative work of faculty that defines the best of public research universities," said Tripathi. "Today, UB celebrates the scholarly excellence of our faculty and their critical contributions in ensuring the purpose of the public research university -- the discovery, application, and transmission of new knowledge -- is perpetuated, not only today, but throughout generations to come."

"What we see here are the result of the world-class scientists and researchers." Genco said. "It is their hard work and dedication to their field that puts UB on the map in both the academic world and within industry. It is important for us to honor and recognize our faculty's contributions in the transfer of knowledge and technology for the benefit of society," Genco added.

“This recognition reflects the University’s endorsement of our scientific achievement and our ability and commitment to bring the science into new drugs which hopefully will help many cancer patients in the future”, said Dr. Allen Barnett, Chief Executive Officer of Kinex. “It is great to work with Kinex to advance my scientific work into something useful for patients. Kinex has a great management team with many years of pharmaceutical experience and management expertise that will help to advance both the scientific programs and the company’s business” said Dr. David Hangauer.

Kinex, a Buffalo based drug discovery and development company, has an exclusive license to technology that was originated at the University at Buffalo. The license gives Kinex access to a patent portfolio that includes a method of generating kinase inhibitors as well as composition of matter patents on numerous new chemical entities (NCE) for use in cancer and other diseases. Kinex is currently focusing on developing an oral available src kinase inhibitor.
