Faculty Research at UB Pays Off in Patents and Start-ups

The Buffalo News reported that the University of Buffalo's fledgling efforts tp translate faculty research into commercially viable products matured in 2003. Research innovations produced in UB laboratories are generating more patent applications, more commercial licenses and more start-up companies. These efforts could generate medical and technological advances and create thousands of jobs for the region.

Dr. David Hangauer, a UB professor of chemistry and VP of research and development at Kinex Pharmaceuticals stated that the efforts being put forward in the region are "our best bet. It's not going to be easy but it is our best bet". Kinex is a drug discovery and development start-up that was founded on technology developed by Hangauer and licensed to the company by UB. UB has an equity stake in Kinex as part of the licensing agreement.

Kinex is working on a new generation of cancer drugs that have shown promise in inhibiting tumors by attacking enzymes kmown as kinases. The Company's platform technology enables the discovery of small molecule inhibitors of important disease targets.
